Children want to connect with the world around them, they want to belong, and they want to make their grown-ups proud.

While teaching in an Elementary classroom for 7 years, I was privileged to receive extensive training on fundamental reading skills for emergent readers. I was just starting to feel confident in my abilities to teach and support my students when they walked through my classroom door each morning, no matter their reading level. I loved my students and loved their families just the same, but the classroom setting was no longer a place I could thrive.

This summer I decided to change career paths and leave the classroom to try corporate training or eLearning instead. But something unexpected happened and about a month out of the classroom I started to feel guilty. Remembering all of the past parents coming to me for guidance on how to support their student and how I didn't deliver more than 15 minutes parent conference or handouts sent home, didn't sit well with me. As a teacher I just didn't have the time, money, or resources to provide them with the guidance they requested but in my heart I couldn't help but share their disappointment.

So, after many failed job applications and interviews I decided to take a pause on job hunting and start working on a project I intended to use as a portfolio for my resume. I saw the opportunity to deliver on my promise and provide guidance and education on all of the fundamental reading skills (I myself had forgotten before my trainings and education) to parents who wanted to learn and Fundamentals with Ms.Foiles was born!

I set out to create online courses designed to teach parents the reading skills they may have learning themselves (because I sure forgot)! Using the knowledge and insight I've gained from incredible colleagues, trainings, and teachers on social media I complied reading activities and games I used with my own students, and hope to use with my future children at home. With the understanding that life is wild and extremely busy, each lesson is broken down into simple explanations with demonstrations. If I can help you better understand the reading skills your child needs to master, you will have the freedom to create a wide array of activities with any number of items you can find around your house.

If I have learned anything from teaching it's this; children want to connect with the world around them, they want to belong, and they want to make their grown-ups proud. With my courses I hope you find ways to show your child that they can read outside of the classroom (like reading the name of their favorite fast food restaurant), introduce and support reading skills they will use in the classroom, and provide opportunities for your child to show you how hard they can work to be successful.

With So Much Love,

Ms.Foiles
